Hawes Post Office

Post Office Opening Hours

  • Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm
  • Saturday 8.30am to 12.30pm

From the Bains Directory 1823 what is now the Post Office at Hawes used to be an inn called the Kings' Head. In the 1891 census the Kings' Head is not mentioned.

  • 1823 Joseph Siddell victualler of the Kings Head Hawes
  • The innkeeper of the King's Head was a Mr. William Mallinson.
  • Later the victualler or licensee was a Mr. John Knowles who resided at Woodhall. Eventually Mr Knowles became the licencee of the Miners Arms at Woodhall.
  • 1829 John Blyth is listed as the innkeeper.
  • 1834 King's Head, James Harker, Hawes (Pigot's Directory)
  • 1840 George Kendal is listed as victualler

Over the front door of the post office quite high up set in the wall is a very early stone head of a king. The post office has also been a grammar school but I don't have the dates.
