Local Studies

Do you want to:

  • Find out about early Viking settlements in North Yorkshire?
  • Study leadmining in the Dales?
  • Research the rise of the railway system in the County?

Do you want to look at old newspapers or photographs or trace the history of your house?

Are you interested in the past of North Yorkshire, its present and future?

The Library and Information Centres in North Yorkshire hold all kinds of information about the County and its people.

We make this material accessible in our libraries and through the Internet. Whatever your interest, contact your nearest library and talk to the staff, or log on to http://www.northyorks.gov.uk/libraries (in a new window)

We can help with school and college projects and even provide information on the changes happening in the County today.

Using the Collections

We try to help anybody concerned with North Yorkshire and its heritage. You can use our historical resources and the Internet to:

  • Discover more about your town or village
  • Investigate the history of shipping on the coast
  • Read about distinguished Yorkshire men and women

The staff will always give advice on the best way to go about your research or recommend relevant websites.

Information can be held on microfilm, microfiche and CD-Roms. Please book a microfilm reader or a computer if you need to use one.

Making the most of the Service

If you would like to be involved in any aspect of Local Studies, please get in touch. We may be able to give you details of an appropriate local society.

If you already belong to a group or have a school class interested in learning more about our Local Studies facilities, make an appointment to visit us.

We may be able to arrange a speaker or a display based around the collections for a society meeting or other school, college or group event.
