The Village Of MarsettThere has been a settlement at Marsett since before 3000B.C. There are remains of round, stone huts on the moor above the village, and we have found flint arrowheads of the period locally. In the 10th Century, Norsemen invaders established a seater, or Summer farm here and called it Marsett, living here in Summer with their livestock. Today there are just two farms, with ten permanent dwellings, six holiday cottages, a joiners shop and the Methodist Chapel. I was born in Marsett, and so was my youngest daughter. She and her husband have one of the farms. Marsett is the only place in the country where Caraway seed grows wild - thanks to a naughty Marsett boy who put a nettle under the Pedlar's donkey's tail, resulting in the seeds he was carrying being spilt over the green - and yes, we use it!
